Valtteri Bottas wins the Austrian Grand Prix
Valtteri Bottas got his second win in this year after landing first in the Austrian Grand Prix, ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton ended fourth after starting eighth and has slipped again 20 points behind the leader of this season’s Grand Prix, Vettel. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo ended third, however, in the final laps there was a fierce race between him and Hamilton, as in the last moments the Australian managed to keep the distance from the Briton.
Bottas gained a deserved victory this time, managing to keep Vettel at distance and preventing him from acquiring more crucial points. As the Grand Prix is nearing its half, it will be a very difficult task for Hamilton to overcome his opponents, but the chances are still there, and the upcoming British Grand Prix would most likely be in Briton’s advantage.
From the eighth place, Hamilton managed to get past Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who was taken out later on by Fernando Alonso’s McLaren after being hit by Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat. In 10 laps he managed to overcome 3 opponents, which followed to be India’s Sergio Perez and Haas’ Romain Grosjean. Hamilton managed to close a nearly 5-second gap in 10 laps, but his next rival, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was more difficult to pass.
Raikkonen made a pit stop on lap 31, which gave Hamilton the advantage to pass him, but it was difficult for the Briton to hold on as his rear tyres were blistering.
Hamilton was attempting to overcome Ricciardo on the 3rd, but it seemed to be a nearly impossible task, as he was losing his grip at that time. The Briton managed to close by a second in the final laps, but the Australian managed to keep him off.
Bottas was similarly having trouble with the rear tyre blisters as Vettel was just 1 second behind. However, the Finn managed to keep his driving in optimal control to finish first.
The next race will take place at the British Grand Prix, where Hamilton has already won 3 successive times. It will be very important for the Briton to gain his 4th one and start closing the point gap to Vettel.
