Liverpool Loses to Southampton in EFL Cup Semi-Final

Southampton surpassed Liverpool in the match from 25th January and made their way to the EFL Cup final.

The visitors had a chance to score in the first 45 minutes, but the keeper Loris Karius blocked Dusan Tadic’s close shot, and another opportunity was missed when Steve Davis’ great hit didn’t reach home’s net.

Liverpool put more pressure in the second half, but Daniel Sturridge missed two chances, Fraser Foster hooked Emre Can’s shot off the line and the substitute Divock Origi challenged Jack Stepehens, which almost resulted in a penalty.

Saints’ Long collected Josh Sims’ pass and sent the ball into the hosts net in the stoppage time. This gained them victory over Reds and sent them into the finals of the EFL Cup, which happened for the first time since 1979. They will have to play then either against Hull City or Manchester United.

Saints ended the game with a victory, which will be rewarded with their match at Wembley on 26th of February. Even when the home side complained about the penalty decision, nobody could seriously say that it wasn’t a fair win.

Southampton showed their skill and teamwork quality, to endure hard consequences and still be successful on their way to victory.

They lost such players as Victor Wanyama and Sadio Mane to Tottenham and Liverpool. Their previous manager, Ronal Koeman, switched to Everton in the summer, but they still fought in best spirits and achieved the chance to participate in the finals at Wembley.
