England defeat Portugal in the Women’s Euro 2017Posted: August 4, 2017
England has defeated Portugal by a 1-2 score in the Women’s Euro 2017 on 27th of July.
Toni Duggan fired the opener from 25 yards in the 7th minute to put her team ahead. Portugal however, were sharp managing to equalise 10 minutes afterwards, from Caroline Mendes’ shot.
Shortly after the break, Nikita Parris managed to double the score for England and put her team in front again.
Portugal had some chances in the second half, but visitors’ keeper, Siobhan Chamberlain performed excellently saving her team from a devastating outcome.
Portugal has entered the tournament as the lowest ranked team, however, they beat Scotland before and were close to reaching their target this time.
England will play next with their runners-up, France. However once again, it might be a tough challenge for the team, as England never managed to beat France since 1974.
Their boss, Mark Sampson, implied that his team would perform great in the same formation they beat Scotland and Spain, but the things started to look the other way in the late first half.
After Portugal equalised Duggan’s goal in the first half, they became sharper and their possession started to increase. It became alarming for England, as the 38th world’s ranked team was overpowering them, with Silva and Claudia Netto’s excellent attacks. However, in the second half, the visitors regained the confidence, after Parris turned the tables with her goal. This game might have signalled about England’s weakness, and it will surely be an entertaining encounter against France, which could be the end of continuous defeats that have been lasting since four decades.
