Atletico Madrid win against Bayer LeverkusenPosted: March 6, 2017
Atletico Madrid has won with a 2-4 score against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League’s Last 16 tie on February 21st. The opener was fired by Atletico’s Saul Niguez’ left foot into the top corner. This was his fifth season goal for Atletico Madrid.
The visitors doubled the score when Antoine Griezmann received the ball from Kevin Gameiro getting past Leverkusen’s defender Omer Toprak. Home goalkeeper, Berndt Leno made two stunning saves from Griezmann before going into the half break. Leverkusen scored one in the early of the second half when Karim Bellarabi launched past visitor’s defence. However, 10 minutes after that, Atletico regained their two-goal lead with Gameiro’s penalty.
Shortly after Gameiro’s goal, Stefan Savic made an own goal, giving Atletico only one goal advantage this time.
In the last minutes, the substitute Fernando Torres launched the fourth goal, sealing the win for the visitor’s side in this round. The 2nd-leg match will occur at the Vicente Calderon on 15th of March.
Leverkusen had not their best game played this time. They finished 3rd placed in the last season’s Bundesliga with 20 points behind the tops, Bayern Munich. In the Champions’ League group matches, they got out unbeaten.
Kai Havertz became the first player born after 1999 to play in this competition. He assisted three goals in the past five matches but hardly made an impression this time.
Atletico showed an outstanding performance, hitting the Germans when their guard was dropped off. Griezmann mustered more efforts on the target from which he scored one goal as Chelsea’s striker, Torres, who claimed his 41st goal in the European tournaments.
